About Moab Taiko Dan

Moab Taiko Dan (MTD) is a unique drumming group located in the southwest desert canyons of the Colorado Plateau. Founded in 1994, MTD is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization whose members include amateur drummers from all walks of life within the local community. MTD performs traditional Japanese taiko drum songs along with original compositions and multi-cultural rhythms. The group is under the instruction of Sensei Tiffany Tamaribuchi of Sacramento Taiko Dan.


Moab Taiko Dan seeks to:

  • Promote cultural awareness and diversity;
  • Develop and maintain supportive links with local community groups, events and activities;
  • Focus individual growth, development and expression through the art of taiko drumming;
  • Provide performances in a wide variety of local venues.

In partnership with the Moab Half Marathon, Moab Arts Festival and BEACON AfterSchool Program, Moab Taiko Dan provides local entertainment and taiko drumming instruction throughout the year. In addition, it sponsors numerous Japanese cultural exchanges and performances, bringing to Moab, Utah performing groups such as WARIKI, SHIDARA, HANAUI (KODO), and TAIKOPROJECT, as well as individual artists like Akira and Raya Katogi.
